Niall Breslin, better known as Bressie, popular singer/ song writer and television personality on the ‘Voice of Ireland’ was announced as the ambassador for the An Post Tour of Sligo 2014 at the recently held national launch for An Post Cycle Series. The cycle Series commences with the Sligo Tour on the May Bank Holiday weekend with four other events taking place over the summer months in Clare, Meath, Waterford and Cork.
Bressie who is a keen cyclist and a regular participant in triathlons is looking forward to taking part in the Sligo Tour stating “I am delighted to be on board as ambassador for An Post Tour of Sligo. I have cycled in Sligo before and the scenery was spectacular so I am looking forward to being back in Sligo on the bike in May”. He added “This will be my final big training event in the build up to my preparation for an ironman triathlon in Austria later in May and I have heard it is a challenging route so that will be a good test”. With the An Post Tour of Sligo having events to cater for everybody from families to serious amateurs including 10K, 60K, 100K and 160K, Sligo ambassador Bressie encouraged people to join him on the starting line in Sligo on the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Last year an incredible 2,500 participants took to the roads of Sligo for the An Post Tour of Sligo 2013, including the family fun day and the main events, and this year promises to be even better with Special Olympics Connacht involved as the 2014 charity.
This is the sixth year of An Post Cycle Series, and almost 50,000 people have saddled up since the very first event took place in Sligo in May 2009. 16,500 people got on their bikes in 2013, a 300% increase on the numbers who took part that first year. The 2014 An Post Cycle Series gets underway on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May with the An Post Tour of Sligo. This will be followed by the An Post Tour De Burren in Clare on Saturday, 21st June, while the An Post Meath Heritage Cycle Tour will take place on Satruday and Sunday, 26th/27th July. The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford takes place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday, 24th August and finally the An Post Rebel Tour of Cork will be on Saturday, 13th September. Each county’s event is organised by the Irish Sports Council’s Local Sports Partnerships in conjunction with their city, county and cycling club partners.
